first, most home coffee makers don't heat the water hot enough so you lose flavor thru poor extraction.
second, they probably have a filter on the water line into the brewer that filters out funny tastes and undesireable chemicals in most drinking water.
a third factor may be if you are buying the coffee pre ground it starts to lose flavor as soon as you open the bag.
your best bet is to get a grinder and buy your beans whole and grind them fresh as you need them. the most reliable and ironically cheapest home method is a manual cone filter. you can buy them in the coffee aisle at the supermarket. you boil water on the stovetop and pour it over the grounds. this makes the freshest and most flavorful coffee brewed at home and will probably be the closest tasting to what you buy at DD.
