Default espresso v. coffee?

what is the difference between espresso from a coffe shop and coffee that I brew at home in the pot. also what is the difference with a french press. I have tried it and its good but what exactly is it?

I think espresso is stronger then regular coffee. and the smell of the espresso much better then coffee.
